Inspiring Inclusion: NDIS Community Participation for a Brighter Future
We welcome a brighter future of inclusion and community participation with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). We've titled this article 'Inspiring Inclusion: NDIS Community Participation for a Brighter Future', because everyday we witness the way in which the NDIS is transforming lives and fostering a sense of belonging for not only the participants that we serve here at Carewise Group but for all people with disabilities.
With the NDIS, individuals are empowered to take charge of their lives, participate socially in their communities, and pursue their dreams. As an NDIS provider we can tailor support for the individual to ensure that they have equal opportunities and access to services that promote their independence and well-being and align with their interests, hobbies and values. Through the NDIS, participants are supported to engage in meaningful activities aimed at connecting them to their peers and to community groups, which foster's a sense of belonging, enriching and uplifting quality of life.
Here at Carewise Group we are obsessed with creating "places to belong" for our young men to engage with the people around them. We've prioritised a culture of interdependence, because together, as a group, we are happier and stronger.
One initiative that our young men love, is our quarterly camping trips. This program provides opportunity for our young men to get outdoors and catch up with their friends.
We see the remarkable difference that social participation and human connection can have on the lives of the young men that we serve. As a NDIS service providers we must go beyond delivering basic services and begin to think holistically in terms of our participants overall well-being, with social participation and community interdependence being the cornerstone for transformation. The NDIS is not simply just a support system, but it can and should be a catalyst for change and empowerment that should assist in breaking down the barriers to a more connected society, one which embraces our most vulnerable.
The Importance of Inclusion
We know that Inclusion is a fundamental human right, and that it is vital for creating a society that values diversity and equality. When individuals with disabilities are included in their communities, it presents them with an opportunity to contribute to the social fabric in meaningful ways. As human beings, when we have the ability to contribute, we feel useful and when we feel useful, we experience progress and we feel fulfilment. This is a positive thing for the community at large.
For people with disabilities, inclusion can be trans-formative. Community participation provides opportunities for skill development and learning. Whether it is joining a sports club, participating in art workshops, or attending vocational training programs, individuals with disabilities can acquire new skills and knowledge that empower them to lead more fulfilling lives.
Community participation encourages social interaction and helps build and nurture meaningful relationships, which as we know is important for vitality and longevity. Furthermore inclusion promotes physical and mental well-being. Engaging in activities that one enjoys can improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.
How does the NDIS support Community Participation?
The NDIS recognises the importance of community participation for individuals with disabilities and provides funding and support to facilitate their engagement. It is included in 50 per cent of all plans for NDIS participants, which makes it the second most funded support. Through individualised funding packages, participants can access the necessary resources, services, and supports to actively participate in their communities.
Funding can be allocated for various purposes, such as joining community groups, attending social events, accessing transportation services, or enrolling in recreational activities.
The NDIS takes into account an individual's goals, aspirations, and support needs when determining the funding allocation, ensuring that it aligns with their specific requirements.
Additionally, the NDIS provides support coordination services to assist participants in navigating the complexities of community participation. Support coordinators can help individuals identify suitable community groups and activities, develop strategies for effective engagement, and connect them with relevant services and supports.
Building a Support Network for Inclusion
A support network is crucial for facilitating community inclusion and can consist of individuals, organisations, and services that provide assistance and guidance to individuals with disabilities. NDIS providers play a vital role in fostering connections, providing emotional support, and facilitating access to resources and opportunities.
Unfortunately, due to the isolating effect that a disability can have on a person's life, many participants have a sparse circle of support. So how can we change this and build stronger support networks in the community?
The first step in building a support network is identifying key people and organisations that can contribute to an individual's well-being and community engagement. This may include family members, friends, support workers, community organisations, and disability service providers. Engaging with these individuals and organisations can help create a support system that addresses the unique needs and goals of the individual.
At Carewise Group, when we commence the support of a participant we first identify their current circle of support. We then look at ways in which the participant would like to engage with the community and from there we identify key people, organisations and groups that we can actively involve in the wrap-around support of our participants.
Regular communication and collaboration with support network members are essential for maintaining strong connections and ensuring ongoing support. This can be achieved through meetings, phone calls, emails, or online platforms. With the participant in the drivers seat, we can actively involve the support network in collaboration of inclusive initiatives to put into place for the participants daily community participation support. Working Together for a more Inclusive Community.
It's the job of the whole community to promote inclusion and community participation, and it requires a multi-faceted approach that involves various strategies and actions.
Education and Awareness: Promoting education and awareness about disabilities can help dispel misconceptions and reduce stigma. We can achieve this through community workshops, awareness campaigns, and inclusive educational programs.
Accessible Infrastructure: Creating accessible infrastructure is crucial for enabling individuals with disabilities to participate fully in their communities. This includes accessible public buildings, transportation, and recreational facilities.
Inclusive Policies and Practices: Governments, organisations, and community groups need to adopt inclusive policies and practices that promote the active participation of individuals with disabilities. We can implement inclusive employment practices, or provide accessible information and communication.
Peer Support Programs: Peer support programs can play a significant role in promoting inclusion and community participation. These programs connect individuals with disabilities and provide opportunities for mentorship, socialisation, and skill-sharing.
Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, disability service providers, community organisations, and individuals with disabilities, is crucial for creating inclusive communities. By working together, we can pool resources, share expertise, and develop innovative solutions to promote inclusion and community participation.
